Sara Thorne

Sara serves Christ Church Kensington as a deacon. Ordained deacon in November 2020 she is called to bringing the love of God to God’s people both inside and outside of our sacred spaces. Sara seeks to walk with all in their journeys discovering God’s call to them in our life as community; growing together to create God’s Beloved Community.

Raised in a small homogenous midwestern town, she and her husband John, moved to Washington DC in 1988. Sara participated in and led many parent association activities at National Cathedral School and St. Albans School, heading St. Albans Parent Association 2009-2010 during the school’s Centennial celebration.

A semester in Haiti as an undergraduate at Trinity College (Hartford) where she earned her BA in Intercultural Studies and Peace Corps in the Philippines while writing a MA thesis in Medical Anthropology for Michigan State University gave her a global world view and a desire to work for transformative social justice. She served on the founding Governing Board of the Bishop John T. Walker School for Boys in Congress Heights, DC. Thirty years as a member of St. Alban’s Church, DC had her serving on Vestry, Altar Guild, chairing Bazaars, and chairing Vestry Grants for Transformation Committee. She has mentored Education for Ministry and is currently mentoring a Sacred Ground Circle at Christ Church.

Sara and her husband have four adult children and five grandchildren. Cape Cod Bay beaches, Cathedral bells (listening, not ringing), and cooking for family and friends bring her joy.
